Mobile City Handy parken in Saarbrücken wird eingestellt

Man kennt ja nicht die Gründe der Entscheider bei der Landeshauptstadt Saarbrücken, ich persönlich finde es aber sehr traurig, dass der Vetrag mit Mobile City für das Handy Parken eingestellt wird (link).

Laut Mobile City bedeutet dies für den Kunden a) kein minutengenaues Parken mehr und b) nur noch per SMS aktivierbar, was wiederum Telefonkosten verursacht, wodurch der Vorteil des Handy parkens stark eingeschränkt wird.

Die Gründe der Landshaupsstadt sind hier nachzulesen.

Keine Registrierung finde ich ja gut, aber ich will explizit nicht über mein Handy abrechnen (weil Firmenhandy), also muss ich mich doch bei sms&park anmelden. Dann gibt es aber kein einfaches Lastschriftverfahren, sondern ich muss ein PrePaid-Guthaben hinterlegen. Ob die SMS Gebühren dann auch vom PrePaid Guthaben statt von meinem (Firmen) TK-Anbieter abgebucht werden ist mir nicht klar. Letzteres währe ein no-go.

Ich bedanke mich auf jeden Fall bei Mobile City für eine jahrelange tolle Dienstleistung und wünsche ihnen weiterhin alles gute.

Update: immerhin, es gibt eine Android App. Mal schauen ob die was taugt.

Download and install the Android SDK.
On your device, go to Settings > Application > Development. Check the “Enable USB Debugging” box.
Plug your device in to your computer via USB.
Run the DDMS.bat file inside the \tools\ directory, in the folder where you installed the Android SDK.
A program called Dalvik Debug Monitor Service should appear, with your device listed in a panel on the left-hand side.
Click the name of your device in the list.
Click Device > Screen Capture in the window menu to open another window, Device Screen Capture.
Press Refresh in this window to grab the current screen from the device.
Press Save to save the screenshot to disk.

NVIDIA and KDE4 problems: SOLVED!

KDE4 never really worked on my PC. It was slow, everything was slow, not only effects :-(

I have a NVIDIA 8600 GT, and I was used to compiz, which performed very nice with this grafic card.

I knew there were few possible source of problems:

KDE4
Qt
Nvidia driver

At the beginning of KDE4 (KDE4.0), many performance problems were mentioned with Nvidia drivers, so I didn't invest too much time, just updated KDE 4 with every new version, but it didn't get better. I also tried several Qt tweaks, but still no luck. Same for Nvidia: I downloaded and tested every new version, KDE3 was running very well, even if compiz, but KDE4 was still very very slow.

Few days ago, I found this following entry in openSUSE formens. It suggest to "activate" RenderAccel in sax2 configuration. I don't know if you have ever been in the sax2 driver configuration dialog, but here is what it looks like:

I've also been here a couple of times, but never realized that you can activate/deativate driver options here. "activate" means selections, deactivate means no selection. No very userfriendly and intuitive, I expected to have a checkbox or a true/false option panel or something like that.

However, now everything is fast and I'm enoying all nice desktop effects :-)

Few critics:

Why is RenderAccel not activated by default? @suse
Fix usability of SaX driver options dialog. @suse
I think kde4 should work well also without some features supported by grafikcards. I think RenderAccel is mostly for transparency effects.

Thanks to the upnp2mrtpg script I'm now monitoring my Fritzbox.

Also, I upgrade from mediawiki 1.11 to 1.14, and as usual, everything went smooth. It took 5 minutes including download, mysql update and first test. As I don't have any special adaptation (compared to other people I know) I had nothing to patch. I just checked that https is still working (was, because it's apache configuration and has nothing to do with mediawiki).
Finally I installed few more plugins I got used to: fckeditor, syntax highlighter. Still have to test file indexer.

Wenn ich jemanden etwas "beibringen" möchte (von einer Idee überzeugen, Wissen weitergeben...), dann gehe ich erst mal davon aus, dass er alles selber verstehen kann, nur dass ihm vielleicht noch die notwendigen (Rand-)Informationen (Background) fehlen, um selber die Lösung zu erkennen (schön ist manchmal auch wenn es nicht so ist und einer interessant Diskussion entsteht). Meine Aufgabe ist es ihm diese Information zu liefern.

Und manchmal bin ich derjenige dem die Information fehlt um eine Lösung zu erkennen :-)

It's not my primary job, but during last weeks/months, I somehow was involved in database design/optimization/tuning, and it's one of the thing I like to do.

As with everything, I like to study the theoretical background to understand why things are how they are and build from them some basic rules which helps me to draw optimizations prototypes which I can then double check against real world models.

Aside all official database/oracle documentation (oracle OTN, asktom...), I like to get information from people dealing daily with problems. Blogs are one good source of information for this, so here is a list (in no particular order) of database oriendted blogs I read regulary:

Umh, looks like JavaMail adds itself to the Message-ID. Let's have a look to the FAQ:

Q: I set a particular value for the Message-ID header of my new message, but when I send this message that header is rewritten.
A: A new value for the Message-ID field is set when the saveChanges method is called (usually implicitly when a message is sent), overwriting any value you set yourself. If you need to set your own Message-ID and have it retained, you will have to create your own MimeMessage subclass, override the updateMessageID method and use an instance of this subclass.

Dropbox looks interesting. I also like the homepage, clean and not overloaded. Watch the video to see how easy it is. There is also an (german) article on Pro-linux (remark: they mention how you can create an encrypted filesystem in your Dropbox folder, so nobody (even dropbix) can access your data).

As Jungle Disk, Dropbox is based on Amazon S3, so one could expect that prices are nearly the same ($0.15 per GB), but Dropbox Basic is even free for up to 2 GB.

Update: I checked the 6b14 dialog, and now it's correct. Thank you Sun, this fast fast ;-)

Java GUI still needs a lot of polishing. I wish Romain would come back to Sun for a month and make all visible Java GUI applications looking nice/sexy (maybe black with a lot of cool animations). You can see what is possible with Swing when you look at applications from Palantir. I hope that JavaFX will also be used internally at Sun to rewrite some of the existing interfaces.

The good thing is that still a lot is done under JavaFX, so also Swing benefits from improvements. See the list of Java 6u14 which has just been released. Osvaldo share my impressions, read his last blog entry. As he does, I also appreciate the current development model, Java 7 beeing some kind of playground for new (big) features, and mature stuff is backported to Java 6. Reminds me the (old) Linux development model, with odd/even dual branch developement model. Still I whish they (we, it's open source) would learn more from Linux, for example regular releases.

In other news, the first (0.1) release of Linux Tools (for Linux) Project is out. Read here for more information. Sadly I have no time to test it :-( I'm hacking on a little C# project and must say I like it (except Visual Studio), not so big differences to Java, but some language features and API are simpler to use.

Also don't miss e4 09M1, the first release of the next big Eclipse version (CSS for SWT, SWT BE samples).

Just saw that I have my homepage hosted on Strato since 10 years. I never had problems with them (I also didn't change much) and it was reliable.

I don't use much of their features (scripts, fotoblog...), but it's good to know that I could set up a MySql database.

I don't know if prices are still ok or if it could be much cheaper. I'm currently paying ~ 14,90€ per month for 7 level 1 domains (de/org/net/com 9,99€, mobi 1,99€, info 1,45€, eu 1,45€), 600MB space, 200 email accounts (using 5, each max 1 GB), 100 GB traffic.

If you know a better/cheaper web-hoster let my know by leaving a comment.

finally there is a facebook plugin for pidgin, so pidgin now covers all of my most used IM protocols (skype, facebook, ICQ...).

I wonder if someone ever thoug about writing an e-mail plugin for an instant messenger. It would act like an IM client but send messages with snmp, and show a list of e-mail contacts and query your imap/pop account for now mails, showing them as new IM messages. Would be nice for sall those people out there without IM (because they don't want) but which have an e-mail account.

I used this during the last few days to debug a look&feel problems: Swing Explorer

It's very helpfull. Not only you get a very detailled view of your GUI, but also helps to identify GUI stuff running in the background (invisible), detect dialogs which could have been created later, see in details how the AWt rendering pipeline is drawing your application, detect bottlenecks in your swing event queue...

To get an idea, read the presentation slides from JavaZone conference 2008. I didn't try them, but here are the netbeans and eclipse plugins (and how to use it)

Step 1: add swepl.jar to your classpath
Step 2: start your application by addting swag.jar to the bootclasspath and run org.swingexplorer.Launcher instead of your application. Add your application as paramter to the Launcher.

OpenSuse 64bit

I updated my Suse box 2 month ago from OpenSUSE 10.3 to 11.0. With the update, I switched from 32 to 64bit OS. Mot of the system worked well, but sometimes I find application which do not run.

The problem is a mixture of 32 and 64 bit libraries. For example I have eclipse 64bit, but it crashed when I tried to start it. The problem was that the underlying library (libswt) was 32 bit.

To change it, you can choose in yast on the package in the version tab which version you want to install.

After reinstalling libswt3 as 64 bit eclipse starts perfectly and runs without any problem.

I found a couple of other applications/libraries which were still 32bit. I manually switched to 64bit. But I didn't find a way to tell yast/zypper to install the 64bit version when available for all currently installed 32bit applications. Any idea/hint?

I use my old Nokia 6230i as car phone (Mercedes bluetooth adapter for e65 was above 400€ and didn't work very well: only contacts on the SIM were visible, not contacts stored on the phone) with a dual SIM card. This works great, except that from time to time I have to take the phone out of the car and sync it with Outlook to have the latest contact list on it.

Few weeks ago syncing didn't work. Several people on THE NET (TM) had the same problem. Many of them suggested to switch to an older version of PC suite, as the last one doesn't work correctly with 6230i.

I found out that the clock of the phone was not set. After setting it the synchronization did work, no need to update/downgrade PCSuite. So if you have a sync problem, first check your clock.

installation and firefox integratin without having to restart firefox? strange, but seems to work.
login takes a very very long time..."chat login timeout" :-(
Next try..."An error occured, please try again". It's the first time that a beta service from google really feels like a beta service.
trying another room...doesnt' work either. :-(

let's try to embed a room into my blog:

Let's see what lively is good for: chat rooms, for few people, 20 maximum.
But you can create your own personal room, with furniture and your own avatar. And you can place this room on any web site (incl. myspace, facebook...) that you want. Sounds like a great idea. Don't know if and how you can restrict the access to your own room.

Restart FF. Now it works, I can enter a room. How do I move my avatar? There is a help center, but it doesn't really help. After 5 minutes I still don't know what to do here.
All rooms are empty, am I the only one here to test lively?

"Joining room..."is written on the bottom for minutes. The "Tip below to chat...", but there is no place I can write anything.

Sound is good, 3D, and only active when the browser tab is visible (not good if you chat in one tab and browser in other tabs). But you can take the lively chat out of the browser tab.It's then a regular window and sound continue to work even when you do somethign else.

The Tour started today in Brest.

Whatever happened during last years (doping), for me (as a (mountain) biker) the intensive effort they do during 3 weeks is still very impressive (however they are 10 km/h faster or slower with or without dopoing, they still have the effort).

Of course I'm lucky that at the end Germany won (I'm half German), but Turkey was a very strong opponent and would have deserve to go into the Euro 2008 final as well.

Das Wunder von Basel

Ich bin zurück aus Basel. Alles lief perfekt. Entspannte Fahrt nach Basel, private Unterkunft 300m vom Stadion entfernt (Muttenz, in etwa hier, danke Mark), super Sitzplätze im St.-Jakob Stadion und ein tolles Spiel (Portugal-Deutschland 2:3). Nur das Bier ging gar nicht. Eine schande dass die UEFA auch die lokalen Kneipen zwingt das Bier des Sponsors zu verkaufen anstatt lokale Brauereien zu fördern. Ein paar wehren sich dagegen, so dass wir letztendlich in dieser Bar gelandet sind.

Die nächsten 2 Tage haben wir im Fußballtrainingslager in Fénétrange (map) verbracht. Mittlerweile wird zwar mehr mit den Kindern gespielt als Fußball gespielt, aber es erfreut auch das Kind-Im-Manne Herz wenn man ein riesen Lagerfeuer macht, mit dem Traktor durch die Straßen fährt und in der Saar schwimmen geht.

Dachte es wäre 20h und wollte die Nachrichten schauen. Eingeschaltet und direkt auf "1" gedrückt. Tatsächlich war es 19:37. Quiz mit Jörg Pillawer. Dummes Grinsen und lachen über Gäste Witze die gar nicht lustig sind. Weiter zur 2 (ZDF), die Rosenheim Cops. "Der fragt sich wieso seine Frau 5 mal am Tag mit ihrem Fitness Trainer trainiert. Ok, besser weiterschalten. RTL: "Gute Zeiten, schlecht.." Den Rest habe ich zum Glück nicht mehr lesen können so schnell war ich bei RTL2: "Big Brother ", 8. Staffel mit Jürgen Milski. Wer nervt wen, wer fliegt raus, wieso bin ich blöd. Next: SAT1, das SAT2-Magazin. Ein übergewichtiger Deutsche wädelt mit zwei kleinen WM Fahnen und muss die Flaggen derGasteberländer erkennen (Schweiz, Österreich) und wird gefragt von welcher Mannschaft Kai Pflaume (Bild) der Trainer ist. Schluck! Sosnst: auf VOX "Das perfekte Dinner" und auf Pro7 läuft Galileo. Naja, geht noch. Ziehe mir trotzdem die Schuhe wieder an und gehe raus in die Sonne.
Armes Deutschland, vielleicht sind wir noch viel schlimmer dran als uns Klimakatastrophe und Welthunger suggerieren.

Kultur Wochenende

Mein Fuß (Bänderanriss) tut immer noch weh, also genügend Zeit für Kultur :-)

Am Freitag Abend in der Alten Feuerwache das Musiktheater Stück "Erhöhte Temperatur" angeschaut. Witzig, frech, amüsant, tolle Ideen. Anschließend in der sparte4 zum live Hörspiel "Pat Garret and Billy the Kid" gegangen von meinem Bekannter Götz Schneyder. Kam leider zum Hörspiel zu spät, die 2 Bands die dann gespielt haben waren aber auch nicht schlecht. Sollte mal öfters in die sparte ehen, der Tatort Abend könnte auch immer gan nett sein. Mal schauen, wenn ich es Donnerstag rehctzeit nach Hause schaffe gehe ich vielleicht in die Verwandlung.

Heute in Picasso on the Move gewesen. Sehr beeindruckend. Tolle Musik (Strawinsky) und schöne Bilder. Ballet ist normalerweise nicht so meins, aber was Marguerite Donlon da auf die Bühne gezaubert hat ist schon vom Feinsten.

... was da in Myanmar passiert. Irgendwie fühlt man sich hilflos, zumindest sollte man die Helfer durch Spenden unterstützen. Unter Hilfe für die Opfer des Wirbelsturms "Nargis" in Birma gibt es ein paar Spendenkonten. Wir sollten alle mal kurz nachdenken wie gut es uns im Vergleich geht und ein paar Euro locker machen.

Auch nicht vergessen sollte man die anderen Krisenherde: Zyklon in Bangladesh, Erdbeben in Peru und China, Flutopfer in Südostasien, Erdbeben in Java, Pakistan und Indien und nicht zuletzt auch die Opfer des Irak-Krieges. Egal wie man zu dem Krieg an sich steht, letztendlich trifft es immer die Falschen und sie benötigen DRINGEND Hilfe.

Days off

I have some days off, so time to have a life aside work :-)

went to my first 3 stars restaurant yesterday evening (Erfort). Expensive, but very good (food, service, athmosphere..)
installed ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop (wubi). I'm a long term OpenSuse/KDE user (since around Suse 6.x), so... but Ubuntu runs well. The panel is freezing sometimes, and it feels a little bit slow (2.6.24 kernel...could be never), but hardware detection is great, wireless networking solved very good, bluetooth/3d desktop effects intergration nice.
drove to Aachen today to visit a friend. Watched Chelsea-Liverpool (3:2) together. Great match. English teams rocks.
not sure were I will go next. Maybe to Düsseldorf ...
can't still do no sport because of my ligament rupture (2 1/2 weeks ago). Maybe I will try to cycle a little bit next week end
finally Java 6 on Mac (Intel 64 only).

I use the nightly build of lightning, which didn't work any more with the last official google calendar provider 0.4. So you have to download the nightly build of the google calender provider as well, then everything is fine.
